World Cup Champion Prediction 47% Chance of France Winning
France has always been mentioned as one of the favorites to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The reason is, they carry out this tournament with the status of the defending champion from the previous edition.
FiveThirtyEight from ABC News has just released their World Cup predictions using the Soccer Power Index (SPI) calculation. The way SPI works is by calculating a combination of the results of the last matches of each national team and the overall quality of their retainers.
So, what are the predictions?
Argentina: 53 Percent Champion Chance
After losing 1-2 when they dueled against Saudi Arabia in the group stage, Argentina's performance was questionable. However, these doubts were successfully broken by La Albiceleste after they successfully progressed to the round of 16 as winners of Group C.
Not only that, they finally succeeded in locking in tickets to the final round after defeating Croatia with a score of 3-0 in the semifinals. Previously, Lionel Scaloni's national team managed to get the Netherlands and Australia to lift their bags from Qatar in the quarter-finals and last 16.
Based on FIFA records, Argentina has scored 12 goals from 6 matches. Interestingly, 3 of them were clean sheets, aka no goals were reciprocated from the opponent.
Until the semifinals, Messi et al have created 3727 passes, scored 83 attempts, and 39 attempted goals of which were on target. Meanwhile, from the defense side, Damian Martinez has been recorded as having thwarted goal attempts from the opponent 34 times.
Recently, Argentina has just benefited from FIFA regulations which whitewashed all records of yellow cards collected during the World Cup. Previously, the national team from South America was showered with yellow cards against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
This luck happened thanks to those who successfully qualified themselves to advance to the final round. This condition allowed Scaloni to show his best strength in the final match. Argentina can play all players, unless there is a bad event, such as injury.
Actually, Argentina is superior when racing on head to head records. This is because Argentina has shown superior results to France in the last 5 meetings, namely 3 wins and 2 defeats against Les Bleus.
Nonetheless, they must not underestimate Didier Deschamps' side. The squad that Deschamps brought to Qatar is a solid team, especially Kylian Mbappe who is incessantly showing good performance on the gridiron.
Based on the results of the SPI analysis, France will be the runner up for the 2022 World Cup. However, this prediction could be off the mark because the SPI score obtained is very close to Argentina, namely 88.4, while Argentina obtained a score of 88.9. Apart from that, Les Bleus' performance while competing in this edition of the World Cup has always been promising.
FIFA notes that the defending World Cup champion has produced 13 goals from his 6 matches during the 2022 World Cup. The final result in the match against Morocco this morning left Les Bleus only keeping one clean sheet.
